Happy 2009

Happy New Year! Due to ye olde broken foot, we stayed in this year, the first time we've stayed home for New Year's in a really long time. Like, maybe 8 years? 10 years? And for the past 5 or 6 years, we've spent it with LB's godparents, who stayed in Vancouver this year. So, it was a very unusual New Year's for us, but still enjoyable.

We started the festivities by celebrating the midnight countdown in Santiago, Chile. I went on the internets and figured out which city would be turning midnight at 7:00 pm our time, so we could celebrate with LB before her bedtime, and the lucky winner was Santiago, Chile. Feliz año nuevo. I think next year we'll do a whole Chilean theme. This year, we just did a little countdown, blew some party poppers, and had hot chocolate. Because, you know, in Santiago, Chile they have hot chocolate on New Year's. (No, of course they don't. Hot chocolate just sounded fun.)

After LB went to bed, we busted out a bottle of champagne, and had Veuve Clicquot with our Jack in the Box. Got drunk, watched episodes of House on our DVR, then Skyped in the New Year with LB's godparents from Vancouver, making fun of the Jonas Brothers.

Though we went to bed late, it was hours before we normally had in years past, which allowed me to finally watch the Rose Parade this morning. I grew up in southern CA, and it's really surprised me that the Rose Parade is not a bigger deal in San Francisco and the rest of the country. The Rose Parade is the ultimate in my childhood New Year memories. Every single channel in LA covers it, some even showing it with no commercials or replaying it on a loop all day long. The coverage starts at 6am, interviewing the volunteers still working to the last minute. I can't tell you how much I loved the Rose Parade. I never missed a single year until I moved to the Bay Area, where much to my dismay, I learned that only one channel carried it, and it was only shown once in the morning. After a late night of partying, I was never awake in time to catch the parade in all these last 10 years.

The parade is paused on my TV right now, and I'm so excited to watch it again after 10 years. I'm fairly certain it's not as awesome as it could possibly be in my mind, but childhood traditions are supposed to loom large in your memories. I hope one day to take LB to Santiago, Chile, where she'll realize that they don't ring in the New Year by drinking hot chocolate and going to sleep at 7 pm.

How interesting! As a NJ kid - I never considered the rose bowl parade even remotely important.

Even after having my holiday plans dictated for 4 years by Bowl Games - it is nearly impossible for Notre Dame to be in the Rose Bowl - no matter how good/bad they are, so I another reason to not care about the rose bowl.

Imagine my surprise when I caught it on TV this year - those floats are awesome! I've been in every major parade in the country (Fiesta bowl, orange bowl, Macy's NY Turkey day, New Orleans Mardi Gras, countless others) but I'd never seen such badass floats. For example - they had one with a 600 gallon pool on it - with 3 divers flipping into it the entire parade - AND IT DIDN'T EVEN WIN A PRIZE. These people are serious. And they have HUGE cash. It can't be cheap to have a 600 gallon pool float make a turn and make the wheels and engine stuff invisible.

perfect just like mommy said...

I saw that pool float! As I became an older child, imagine my surprise when I finally watched other parades (Macy's Thanksgiving, etc.) and realized that no other floats were made out of flowers! What a let down. I mean, I literally could not wrap my child brain around the idea that some floats were just made out of... paint. And wire. And plastic. I was totally disappointed.

OMG, I don't even remember talking about the Jonas Brothers, which shows you how drunk I was... and how much fun you can have staying in and Skyping on NYE. :)

I didn't realize that everyone didn't watch the Rose Parade... I grew up in KY and we alwyas did. Just like on Thanksgiving you have to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade...I'm pretty sure it's a rule......
